The EN 354 standard specifies the requirements, test methods, marking, information supplied by the manufacturer and packaging for lanyards. Lanyards conforming to this Standard are used as connecting elements or components in personal fall protection systems (i.e., restraint systems, work positioning systems, rope access systems, fall arrest systems and rescue systems).
The lanyards are not fitted with energy-absorber; therefore, they can only be used to prevent a fall, not to stop it. Whether used in “work positioning” or “restraint” situation.
The devices conforming to EN 354 have a breaking load of 23 kN. Therefore, if needed, they can be wrapped around a tubular structure that cannot be used with a normal snap hook and can become a safe anchoring point for any type of PPE. This must be done while paying the utmost attention to sharp edges which could sever the rope.
